Jamia Millia Islamia Vice-Chancellor Najma Akhtar has said that the varsity will not tolerate police presence on campus and has demanded a high-level inquiry into the crackdown on university students. Addressing a press conference, Akhtar said police entered the campus on Sunday night without permission and added that assaulting students who were studying in the libraryis unacceptable.
Jamia students are back on the streets, standing shirtless in bone chilling winter to demand action against Delhi Police over the violence on campus last night. Slogans of "in quilab zindabad" echoed as the group took out a demanding CBI inquiry into "police brutality". Another group of students have formed a human chain to resume peaceful protests against the politically contentious Citizenship Amendment Act.
The Supreme Court, meanwhile, said it will hear all matters related to the new citizenship law on December 18. Protests against the amended act that started in Assam and Bengal last week have now spread to Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, with universities in Hyderabad and Mumbai also witnessing solidarity marches.
172 students, staff and faculty of IIM Bengaluru have penned an open letter to the Prime Minister against the police on Jamia students. The letter reads: "We the undersigned members of IIM Bangalore stand in solidarity with students around the country protesting against the Citizenship (Amendment)Act of 2019 (CAA).
We call upon you to not trample the democratic rights of citizens to peacefully protest an unjust law. Non-violent civil disobedience is at the heart of our republic's founding. We urge you to ensure that student scan protest peacefully, and that violence is not incited by anyone including custodians of state in positions of great authority and responsibility.
Section 144 has been imposed in all districts of Uttar Pradesh as a wave of protests grip the state. "Section 144 of CrPC remains imposed in all districts of Uttar Pradesh," Additional Chief Secretary(Home) Awanish Awasthi says.
